PICTURE BOOKS

duck_.jpg10 Little Rubber Ducks by Eric Carle
        Carle takes an actual incident, when numerous bathtub toys fall off a container ship and float to various places, and creates a marvelous counting/concept adventure.  One rubber duck actually meets up with a real mother duck and her offspring and bobs along with them to their nest.   When they quack goodnight - children can actually press the page to hear the rubber duck “squeak” in response.  Great for one-on-one sharing.


menu.jpgTacky and the Winter Games by Helen Lester
        Tacky and his fellow penguins must train hard to get into shape so they can represent Team Nice Icy Land in the Winter Games.  There will be bobsledless racing, ski jumping and a speed skating relay race.  Let the games begin!

        Australian sheep shearers always have a sheep dog - a well trained dog with names like Brute, Tiny or Fang who bark commands.   But Shaun- the most skillful sheep shearer in Australia - has a sheep-sheep named Pete, who speaks politely to the other sheep.  The other shearers are not amused, but it doesn’t phase Shaun or Pete at all.  Humorous tale for all.

        Thoreau-inspired picture books featuring Henry, the bear, “walking to work.”  Though unemployed in the traditional sense, Henry manages to water wildflowers, build a path across a brook, and share news of a coming storm with his neighbors as he ambles his way through Concord, Mass.

        When the old woman who lived in a shoe decides she and her kids are too cramped, she calls on the local real-estate agent, Mama Goose, who suggests they move into the house of Snow White and the seven dwarfs who are staying with Repunzel.  So begins the rhyme of fairy tale characters switching houses and moving in with others.

        Fans will welcome another book in this popular series.  Henry and his dog, Mudge, visit Great Grandpa Bill in the house where he lives with lots of other grandpas.  They find a pond that looks great for swimming and convince the other great grandpas to jump in the water.  Great for beginning readers K- Gr. 2.

        Another adventure about these two lovable cows.  Minnie believes her jelly donut has been stolen and Moo is determined to catch the thief.  Children will giggle over the cows’ leaps in logic and bumbling sleuthing.  Gr. 1-3.

In simple rhymes, a girl describes her daily routine as she cares for her pony.  Horse-mad kids who are just starting to read on their own will pour over this story about Lacy and her pony, Jack.  PreSchool-Grade 2.

        Down  Girl - a curious dog - takes a trip to the beach and camping with her owner whom she call Rruff; her best dog friend, Down Girl gets her nose pinched by a crab, eats hot-dogs and chases squirrels.  Everyone loves Down Girl and her adventures.  Gr. 1-3.

        Pinky’s brother is worried about starting first grade so she uses her big imagination to think up a wacky story to help him feel better.  This book is as cool as its name.  Kindergarten-Gr.3.

        Nine year old Liz is helping her grandmother prepare to sell the old cabin when she is awakened at night by a strange blue light  It is a ghostly woman dressed in old fashioned clothes who calls her name and then vanishes into the wall.  Liz follows the sounds and finds herself into the same cabin, but long ago when it was first built.  Mystery fans will enjoy this spooky story.  Gr. 2-4.

        Lucy is full of summer plans - to write in her journal, make a lanyard key chain , protect her grandmother’s apricots from squirrels and have a birthday adventure with her father.  Although there are some unresolved problems throughout the book  (and Lucy’s summer) - she does manage to have a summer full of adventures.  Lucy Rose returns in high spirit in this second book of the series.  Gr. 2-4

        12 year old Henry’s mother and father are off to Africa leaving him alone with his aunts, Magnolia and Pigg, for several months.  They embark on a destination-less car trip that feels more like a kidnapping to Henry.  A new offering from the queen of offbeat.  Gr. 5-9

        A young, injured bear breaks into Anchorage’s Alaska Zoo.  The zookeeper’s son witnesses “Trouble” killing a beautiful goose.  Jonathan must face his own sadness at the lost of “Mama Goose”, his anger at Trouble and his understandings of wild animals and their instinctive behavior.  Gr. 3-6

        A humorous look at the struggles of the Boston Red Sox described by a father to his daughter at Fenway Park on opening day.  He tells how Babe Ruth led the Red Sox to 3 World Series wins in 1915, 1916, and 1918.  He was then sold to NY and all of Boston’s good luck went with him.  Gr. 2-7.
